Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Casablanca and transfer to RabatYour adventure begins in Casablanca, Morocco’s economic hub. On arrival, visit the Hassan II Mosque on the Atlantic coast. Then drive to Rabat, the capital, check into your hotel or riad and enjoy a relaxed evening, with a walk along the Corniche or in the medina.
  • Day 2: Rabat to ChefchaouenIn the morning, see the historic landmarks of Rabat: the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified area with views of the Atlantic; the Hassan Tower, an unfinished minaret surrounded by the remains of an old mosque; and the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King. Drive north to Chefchaouen, the blue city in the Rif Mountains, and wander its alleys with blue-washed walls and its cafes.
  • Day 3: Chefchaouen to FesStart with a walk around Chefchaouen, its small artisan shops and views of the mountains. In the afternoon, leave for Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco, with a photo stop at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Check into your riad in the medina and have a traditional Moroccan dinner.
  • Day 4: Full-day exploration of FesSpend the day in the Fes el-Bali medina, one of the largest pedestrian areas in the world. The highlights are Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest university in the world; the Chouara Tannery, where leather is dyed in the traditional way; and the Bou Inania Madrasa, with its Islamic architecture. Eat traditional Moroccan food at a local restaurant and learn about the history and the crafts of Fes.
  • Day 5: Fes to Merzouga Desert via Middle AtlasTravel towards the Sahara through the Middle Atlas: Ifrane, called the Switzerland of Morocco for its alpine-style architecture, and the cedar forests of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. Drive through the Ziz Valley, with its palm groves, and arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the desert. Ride camels across the dunes of Erg Chebbi to a luxury desert camp, with a traditional dinner under the stars and Berber music by the campfire.
  • Day 6: Merzouga to Marrakech via Todra Gorge and Ait BenhaddouWake early for the Sahara sunrise and breakfast at the camp. Return to Merzouga and start the journey west. Stop at Todra Gorge, where rock walls rise on both sides, for a short hike. Visit Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous filming location, and explore its mud-brick kasbahs. Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and arrive in Marrakech in the evening.
  • Day 7: Full-day exploration of MarrakechSpend your last day in Marrakech: Jemaa el-Fnaa, the central square with entertainers, food stalls and artisans; the Koutoubia Mosque and its minaret; the Bahia Palace; and the Majorelle Garden, created by the French artist Jacques Majorelle. Your 7-day adventure ends there, with a transfer to the airport depending on your schedule.
