How Much Does a Trip to Morocco Cost

The dirham, what to budget for each travel style, what a tour includes and how to spend wisely.

The currency: the dirham

Morocco’s currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). It is a closed currency, which means you cannot easily buy it outside the country. The usual way is to bring euros and exchange them in Morocco, at the airport, in banks or at official exchange offices.

Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops in the cities. In the souks and the villages you will need cash.

Budget by traveller type

BackpackerWith simple riads, meals at local stalls and shared transport, you can travel on a modest daily budget, not counting flights.
Mid-range travellerCharming riads, the occasional good hotel, quality restaurants and organised excursions. This is the most common choice, and a good balance between comfort and price.
LuxuryPalaces such as La Mamounia or the Royal Mansour, private transport and exclusive experiences. Morocco offers top-level luxury at a lower price than Europe.

What does an organised tour include?

The big advantage of booking a package is that you know in advance what you will pay. Our tours usually include private transport, accommodation, a guide, some meals and the night in the desert.

This way you avoid surprises and the stress of negotiating every journey.

Tips and haggling

TippingIt is customary. A few dirhams for waiters, porters and guides are appreciated.
HagglingIn the souks almost nothing has a fixed price. A good starting point is about a third of the first price, then raise your offer slowly, always with a smile.
Book with a depositOn our trips you pay only part of the price when you book, and the rest in Morocco.

A final tip

Carry some cash for the day-to-day, and pay the big bookings, such as hotels and tours, in advance.
