The Best Time to Visit Morocco and the Sahara

Which season suits the cities, the mountains and the desert, and how to choose your dates.

Overview

Morocco changes a lot from one region to another, so there is no single best month for the whole country. The imperial cities, the Atlas Mountains, the coast and the Sahara each have their own best season. The right dates depend on what you want to see.

This guide gives a simple way to choose, based on the regions our tours cover.

Season by season

SpringSpring is generally one of the most comfortable seasons for the desert and a good time for the cities. The days are warm and the landscapes are green in the mountains.
SummerSummer is hot in Marrakech and in the desert. It suits the coast, where the air is cooler, and travellers who accept the heat.
AutumnAutumn is, like spring, generally comfortable for the desert. It is a good season for a trip that combines cities and the Sahara.
WinterWinter is cool, and the nights in the desert are cold. The cities are quiet, and the Atlas Mountains can be cold and snowy.

Best time by region

  • Sahara desertSpring and autumn are generally the most comfortable. The Sahara is warm by day and cool at night, especially outside summer.
  • Marrakech and the southSpring and autumn for walking in the medina and visiting the kasbahs. Summer days can be very hot.
  • Fes, Meknes and RabatThe imperial cities can be visited all year. Spring and autumn are pleasant for long days of walking.
  • Chefchaouen and the RifSpring and autumn for walking in the blue medina. Winter can be rainy.
  • Essaouira and the coastThe coast is cooler than the interior in summer, which makes it a good place to add to a summer trip.

How to choose your dates

  • Start with what matters most to you: the desert, the cities or the coast.
  • If the Sahara is the priority, aim for spring or autumn.
  • If you must travel in summer, add the coast and keep the desert nights short.
  • If you travel in winter, bring warm clothes for the evenings and the camp night.
  • If your dates are fixed, tell us and we plan the route around them.

Public holidays and school holidays can make some places busier, so book early for those dates.
